From the Pulpit, Episode 19: Scandal, its Consequences, and Choosing God Over the World

Fr. Nicholás Depósito

Fr. Nicolás Despósito

On this episode of From the Pulpit, we welcome Fr. Nicolás Despósito, Vice-Rector and Professor at Most Holy Trinity Seminary in Brooksville, Florida who will deliver to us two sermons.

The first sermon will be about scandal and the second will be on the importance of humbling oneself and choosing God over all else.

In today's society, immorality is practically everywhere, and it is easy for the world to lower our Catholic standard, thus damaging one's ability to recognize what constitutes serious scandal. Showing a friend a song featuring dirty lyrics, using vulgarity in speech, telling an unsavoury joke for "a bit of a laugh" - how often does one commit these acts of scandal without even considering the consequences it has on other people?

As easy as it is to scandalize others, it is also easily to allow ourselves to be scandalized and to fall into corruption. One must remember that in order to gain salvation, it is necessary to choose God over the world. Only one master can be served, and that master must be God.
