The spiritual life, the effect of the grace of God, seeks to transform the soul from a spiritual death to a life of union with God.
The soul accomplishes this transformation by the infusion of the virtue of charity, the supernatural love of God.
Excessive self-love is the ultimate killer of the spiritual life, dampening the effects of charity. Those who are infected with excessive self-love cannot be transformed into anything.
Secondly, the redemption accomplished by Christ on the cross provided all the sufficient power to bring all men to eternal salvation. However, this power needs to enliven each of our souls.
This power enlivens our souls when we receive God’s grace and apply it to ourselves.
