In Veritate, Episode 9: Sins of the Tongue

The Coat of Arms of His Excellency

The Coat of Arms of His Excellency

Calumny, detraction, gossip – how we love to partake in conversations containing such concepts. Why is that? Perhaps we want to enhance our own conversation. Perhaps we want people to be more interested in us and to engage with us. These sins are rooted in self-love.

The use of such evils is also a sign that one has the mind on low things and that one’s spiritual life is weak. Those who have their minds on the things of God do not care about the faults of others.

Vulgar language – how quickly we use curse words reacting to various events. In itself, a word is arbitrary, but there are, by custom, certain words that are good and certain words that are bad. When we descend into the use of vulgar language, we are offending against justice for we are contributing to the detriment of society and offending the ears of others.

Lying – it is this sin that makes us children of the devil. Even if it were to save the whole world, one should never tell a lie.

These sins and more of the tongue are covered by Bishop Sanborn in this episode from a sermon recorded in 1998.
