This Council occurred not long after what had been a 3 year vacancy of the Holy See as well as the tragic sack of Constantinople by a sidetracked Fourth Crusade. Blessed Gregory X presided over this Council and, with great assistance from St. Bonaventure, managed to get a formal decree of union signed between the Latin and Greek churches. Unfortunately, it would not last long. St. Thomas Aquinas also died on the way to this council.
